One hundred years ago a world war, the bloodiest, the most "modern" conflict until then, upset Europe for over four years, from July 1914 to November 1918.
Seventy million men mobilized, about nine million fallen, millions of prisoners, invalids and refugees, who brought on the body and in their mind indelible wounds. Material and economic damage incalculables.
A war that changed the map of Europe and provoked decisive consequences, as the birth of dictatorships: Fascism, Nazism and Communism in Russia.
We decided to create a web calendar, which follows month to month that war: the characters, the weapons, the battles and the major issues that the conflict has generated. This seems to be a useful way to recall a distant past, yet still close to us.
The calendar will complement historical contents, scripts and vintage images, infographics and artistic reworkings of events or characters.
The narrative will cover Italy and all of Europe, with an eye to Trentino, one of the theatre of war, and where this initiative was the starting point.
The project has a network structure and a transmedia approach: through collaboration with institutions of the sector and the media will be involved different audiences. In particular, thanks to social networks Readers will empathize with the events of the key characters of this tale plural and help to improve it with their comments and suggestions.
The project is sponsored by the University of Trento, with the support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Trento and Rovereto. The scientific responsibility headed by the chair of Contemporary History of the Department of Humanities.
The working group is interdisciplinary and comes from an inter-generational dialogue: next to a professor of contemporary history and a collector of photographic books about the twentieth century, the contents are cared for by young experts in communication, graphic, web and social media.
Thanks to everyone who helped us and that will help us in the next months!
